Many people are probably familiar with the Internet Time tab when setting their clock in Windows. This is a basic form of NTP (Network Time Protocol) called SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) that polls a NTP server every so often to synchronize time to. However, full NTP does a lot more, such as polling several servers to determine what is the best and most stable times source.

Creating your own NTP time server is relatively straightforward and if you are a resident of the US then the simplest way is to use a relatively cheap receiver module, set to receive the WWVB timing signal which is broadcast by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Time) at a frequency of 60 kHz.

To create your own product using the WWVB time signal, WWVB receiver modules, are readily available at low cost. When looking for a receiver module there are several points to consider:

There should be a simple interface to allow easy integration of accurate timekeeping into electronic equipment etc. The receiver should use dedicated chips designed specifically to receive the WWVB (USA) time signal. The advantage of these over other solutions is that the modules include the necessary support electronics, tuned crystals, etc and are preassembled, tested and are usually in miniature form.

When combined with a suitable Antenna the receiver module acts as a complete time code receiver, providing a serial digital data output stream for external decoding.

Once assembled and tested so the module is receiving a signal it can then be connected to your computer or server.

Once connected the time server should be configured using the registry editor. Simply follow these steps:

Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParametersType
In the right pane, right-click Type then click Modify, in edit Value type NTP in the Value data box then click OK.

Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeConfigAnnounceFlags.

In the right pane, right-click AnnounceFlags and click Modify. The ?AnnounceFlags' registry entry indicates whether the server is a trusted time reference, 5 indicates a trusted source so in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type 5, then click OK.

To enable the Network Time Protocol; NTPserver, locate and click:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpServer

In the right pane, right-click Enabled, then click Modify. In the Edit DWord Value box, type 1 under Value data, then click OK.

Now go back and click on:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParametersNtpServer

In the right pane, right-click NtpServer, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type In the right pane, right-click NtpServer, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type the Domain Name System (DNS), each DNS must be unique and you must append 0x1 to the end of each DNS name otherwise changes will not take effect.

Now click Ok then locate and click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpClientSpecialPollInterval

In the right pane, right-click SpecialPollInterval, then click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type the number of seconds you want for each poll, ie 900 will poll every 15 minutes, then click OK.

To configure the time correction settings, locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig

In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Base, click Decimal, under Value Data, type a time in seconds such as 3600 (an hour) then click OK.

Now go back and click: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, then Modify.

In the Edit DWORD box under base, click Decimal, under value data type the time in seconds you want to poll such as 3600 (polls in one hour)Exit Registry Editor

Now, to restart windows time service, click Start, Run (or alternatively use the command prompt facility) and type:

net stop w32time && net start w32time. And that?s it your time server should be now up and running.

Of the three frame processing options on Cisco switches - store-and-forward, cut-through, and fragment-free - identify which one best matches each of the following statements.

Here's a look at each method.

When store-and-forward is in use, the switch does indeed store the entire frame before forwarding it, which allows the switch to check the FCS before forwarding that frame. This allows the greatest level of error detection of the three frame processing methods.

With the other two methods, the entire frame will not be stored before forwarding. When the cut-through method is in use, the switch will read the MAC addresses on the incoming frame, and then begin to forward the frame even as part of it is still being received!

The FCS value is not checked, so while cut-through is a faster method of processing frames than store-and-forward, cut-through has no way to check for damaged frames. Cut-through is the fastest of the three processing methods, but it comes at a high cost - no error detection!

Cut-through is very fast, but offers no error detection; store-and-forward does offer error detection via the FCS check, but isn't as fast as cut-though. Happily, there's a middle ground - fragment-free.

Fragment-free processing works on the presumption that if a frame is corrupted, the corruption will be found in the first 64 bytes. Therefore, fragment-free checks the first 64 bytes of the frame for damage. If no problems are found in the first 64 bytes of the frame, the forwarding process begins!

CCNA Exam:

What command enables the dynamic mappings of DLCIs to IP addresses? Is this command used globally, at the interface level, or elsewhere?

Answer: That's the frame-relay inverse-arp command, and that should be enabled on the appropriate interface and/or subinterfaces. Inverse ARP is enabled by default on Cisco router serial interfaces.


CCNA Security And CCNP / ISCW Exam:

What is RFC 3704 filtering, and why would we use it as part of a security plan?

Answer: IP Spoofing can be used against your network in several ways:

To inject a stream of malicious code and/or commands into your network

To trick legitimate network hosts into sending sensitive data to the attacker

As part of a reconnaissance attack, an attack that in itself may not be damaging, but is used to gather information for future, more destructive attacks.

RFC 3704 (an updated version of RFC 2827) recommends that packets from the following network ranges be prohibited from entering your network:

0.0.0.0 /8

10.0.0.0 /8 (RFC 1918 Class A private range)

127.0.0.0 /8 (loopback address range)

172.16.0.0 /12 (RFC 1918 Class B private range)

192.168.0.0 /16 (RFC 1918 Class C private range)

224.0.0.0 /4 (reserved for IP multicasts)

240.0.0.0 /4 (RFC 1918 Class E private range)


Blocking these address ranges for incoming traffic on your network's perimeter routers is sometimes called "2827 filtering" or "3704 filtering", referring to the original and updated RFCs that discuss this topic in a great deal of detail.


CCNP / BSCI Exam:

There are plenty of offers online offering to give you free money or gift cards to different retailers and you may have received emails telling you that a $500 gift card to a specific store was being held in your name. Many offers may even include a free laptop or home computer system, all for filling out a short survey and then meeting the criteria for the give away. Usually, you will have to sign up for at least two, sometimes three of the offers that show up between pages of the survey to be eligible and a few of those will require some sort of payment. Free information or free products often requiring you pay for postage with your credit card.

When these types of surveys offering free products first began to appear, it took getting to the third or fourth page before you learned there were requirements you had to fulfill in order to be eligible. Now, most have something on the first page to refer you to the eligibility requirements. Filling out surveys can earn you a few extra dollars but if a person is looking to earn a living by becoming a professional survey taker, it is going to take a while to get on the approved list of many companies in order to make any real money.

You will spend time registering to take surveys with hundreds, if not thousands of companies, and once you establish yourself as a survey taker you will be given surveys to take, for which you will be paid. For a person with a lot of time on their hands and the patience to scroll through numerous pages of questions and offers before saying it is not worth my time, there can be ways to receive this free money online. If you own a website, you can also earn money online through affiliate programs and since the company with which you affiliate is doing al the work and you are just pointing your visitors in their direction, it could be considered free money.

However, to get visitors to your website requires marketing or advertising which is not usually free. But obviously you are already promoting your site so any sales commissions you earn from these programs can be considered free. Then there are the companies that promise to pay you just for being online. While reading your own emails, surfing the internet and even doing homework, they claim you will be earning money. Realistically, what you are earning is points that can translate into cash but the amount of points you need for each dollar is going to be immense. Additionally, your earnings level is adjusted by your level of membership in the company.

In other words, the more you pay to join their club, the more money you can make. In many cases, you will be lucky to break even. However, if you spend a lot of time on the internet, you get some free money by allowing them to place their menu bar on your computer.

3. How will they be building your website? Seems like a technical question and it is to an extent. There are a set of guidelines set out by the W3C (World Wide Web Commission) which state the latest coding techniques and methods. Ensure your designer meets these so that you?re not having a website built with out of date techniques!
4. Know what your goals are! This is for you to consider more than anything. You can work these out with a good web designer, however it will benefit you to have them worked out in advance?Is the website just a brochure to support your marketing? Do you want lots of leads and enquiries? Do you want to seel products? Do you see big website developments in the future? All things that are very important information when you meet with a web designer.
