How To Use Your New Portable Hard Drive

A portable hard drive is relatively easy to install and use. Just plug it in and away you go! At least that?s what they told you at the store. It?s so simple that apparently you don?t even need directions. This must be the reason why they didn?t include any in the box. Now that you?ve got it home, just what exactly are you supposed to do with this thing?

Begin by Plugging in Your Portable Hard Drive

Your portable hard drive, also known as a USB drive, can be plugged into any of the USB ports on your computer. The little wire with the rectangle at the end of it is called a USB cable. It will only fit into a USB port. USB ports can be located on the front, side, and back of your computer. Manufacturers suggest that you use a USB port located on the back of your computer, and avoid plugging the portable hard drive into a USB hub. This practice ensures that you are using the best connection available, and cuts down on possible interference, but can oftentimes be rather inconvenient.

The rule of thumb is this: Plug your USB drive into any slot that it fits into. If the drive appears to be running slowly or doesn?t show up on your computer, then try moving it to a slot on the back of your computer.

Now What?

After you?ve plugged your portable hard drive into your computer, two things will generally happen, indicating that it has been correctly plugged in. Your computer will make a beeping sound and a dialog box will appear in the lower right hand corner of your screen telling you that your computer has found new hardware.

The first time you plug your USB drive into your computer, wait a couple of minutes to let it install any drivers necessary before continuing. It will do this automatically. Once the drivers are installed, double-click your ?My Computer? icon. Your portable hard drive will appear as a new drive letter. If it doesn?t show up in My Computer, try plugging it into the back of your computer. If it still doesn?t show up, you may need to partition and format your drive.

And Away You Go!

The most common uses for your portable hard drive are to either transport or make backups of your documents. These uses do not require that you install any special software. You can copy your files to it just as if it were your local hard drive. You can drag and drop your documents right onto the new drive letter listed in My Computer. You can save and edit your documents directly to your USB drive from your programs and applications. Then, you can bring them with you to other locations or store them in a safe place in case your computer crashes.

Removing Your Portable Hard Drive

Never remove your USB drive from your computer while you are copying files to it. This can corrupt your data and cause you to lose your files. The safest way to remove it is to click on the ?Safely Remove Hardware icon? in the lower right hand corner of your taskbar.

Connecting Your Newly Converted External Hard Drive

Connecting your old hard drive to your new external hard drive enclosure is pretty simple. You will most likely not need anything other than a screwdriver. If you have an IDE drive, check that the jumpers on the back of the drive are set to the correct master/slave/cable-select setting according to your new enclosure?s instructions.

From here, it?s simply a matter of securing the drive to the chassis, plugging in the power cables, and connecting the interface cables. Now you can close up the external hard drive enclosure.

Last Step ? Connecting to your PC

Most external enclosures will come with an external power supply and a data cable. Simply hook up the power supply to your new external hard drive enclosure, and connect the provided data cable from the enclosure to an available port on your PC. If the enclosure requires drivers to be installed, you should insert the CD and install it at this point. Your computer should automatically detect your new drive and assign it a drive letter. Double check that the drive is functioning properly by transferring some sample files back and forth. If all is well, then you have successfully turned an old hard drive into an external drive.

Add More Storage to Your Gaming Console With an External Hard Drive

If you have a gaming console that came with a small hard drive or no hard drive at all, then adding an external hard drive is a reasonably quick and simple solution. Sure, you can replace the original hard drives that came in the system with a larger one, but those laptop hard drives can get quite expensive, especially in the larger capacities. An external hard drive will let you add more storage at a much lower price while at the same time allowing you to control the content yourself. On a system like an Xbox 360, you cannot add content to the built in hard drive unless it is downloaded from Xbox Live or ripped from a CD. With an external hard drive, you have full control of your content, and can easily upload or download new content without much trouble.

Choosing Your External Hard Drive

Naturally, you will need a hard drive and an enclosure. Almost any USB external hard drive will work for your purposes. The main difference is if you are looking for portability vs. storage size. If you have some laptop hard drives lying around, then buy a 2.5? laptop hard drive enclosure. The advantages of using a smaller laptop hard drive are that it will be much smaller and much more portable, and will most likely not require a power supply. However, laptop hard drives usually pale in capacity compared to regular 3.5? hard drives of the same price. A 3.5? external hard drive will store much more content but will probably require an extra power port. If your gaming console is usually located in one location and not likely to move around, a 3.5? external hard drive might be the best solution.

Formatting Your Hard Drive

Gaming consoles need an external hard drive that is formatted in the FAT32 file system. You can use virtually any hard drive currently sold on the market, as FAT32 can support hard drives up to 2 Terabytes in size. However, the limitation of FAT32 is that it cannot hold individual files larger then 4GB in size. Also, Windows 2000 and XP cannot create or format partitions larger than 32GB. Windows 98 users can only create and partition hard drives up to 127GB in size. So, in order to create a FAT32 partition and format it above the 32GB or 127GB limitations, you will need a utility like Partition Magic or some other drive/partition utility. I highly recommend CompuApps Swissknife, which can be downloaded for free at download.com for PC users. Mac OSX users can simply open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, choose the desired drive, and click on the Erase. Choose 'MS-DOS (FAT)? and then click on the 'Erase' button. You should now have a hard drive formatted in FAT32.

Once your drive is done formatting in FAT32, it?s simply a matter of uploading content to your new drive and connecting it to your gaming console. Simply connect your USB cable to an available USB port on the front of your Playstation 3, or the back of your Xbox 360. Your game console should recognize your new device automatically, and allow you to browse your new files on the external hard drive.

A cheaper Inkjet printer with more monochrome (black and white) usage would result in a much costlier affair than an expensive Laser purchased as an initial investment for the same usage.

If anyone prints couple of copies a day then an Inkjet printer is sufficient but if the usage is increased to a dozen copies a day then a laser printer is the option to opt. It is difficult to find an all in one printer which performs all the functions without any compromises. An inexpensive Inkjet printer will give out good quality copies but is very slow in its output. A Laser printer will give out commendable photo quality prints at a relatively faster speed but they are quite expensive. Thus choosing according to your priorities will help you narrow down on your printing needs accordingly.

Inkjets produce goods quality print on black text but are very slow in their performance. The cartridges cost dearly and can really mount up on your cheap printer investment. A laser will produce quality prints at a faster rate for black text but are expensive purchases. Inkjets are more viable option for photo print quality. Inkjets have a multi-colour output. It is usually 4-colour but there are 6-colour and even 8-colour outputs available. The recently launched Inkjet printers have sizably reduced their cost of cartridges which are now in vogue again. Mostly Inkjet printers are given away when you buy a computer and they come in handy when the cost of the cartridges has been reduced.

Laser printers are costly but can deliver more copies in one cartridge. Laser printers have an edge over its speedy performance and decent quality prints at a cheaper overhead.
